Main Purpose of the Role:

The Critical Services Engineer for the Baggage Handling System (BHS) at London City Airport plays a vital role in ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and safety of baggage system operations.

This position involves technical investigations on critical assets, conducting inspections, reporting on asset conditions, and planning enhancements to the BHS.

The engineer will also support various stakeholders including the Building Services Project Manager and Facilities Management (FM) teams with technical activities when required. This role requires a strong understanding of technical assurance processes and safety regulations, including the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) and security compliance as mandated by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The team will work closely with project teams to ensure that all systems are operationally effective, compliant with safety standards, and meet the highest quality assurance benchmarks.

 

Main Tasks and Responsibilities of the Role:

Technical Investigations on Critical Assets:

  • Conduct thorough technical investigations on mechanical, electrical, and control systems within the BHS.
  • Analyse failure modes and identify root causes to prevent future occurrences.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement corrective actions based on investigation findings.

BHS Asset Inspections and Reporting:

  • Perform regular inspections of BHS assets to ensure operational integrity and compliance with industry standards.
  • Document inspection results and generate detailed reports outlining asset conditions, maintenance needs, and recommendations for improvements.

BHS Enhancement Design & Planning:

  • Participate in the design and planning of enhancements to the BHS to improve performance, capacity, and reliability.
  • Work closely with engineering teams to develop specifications for upgrades or modifications

Project Support:

  • Collaborate with project teams during the planning and execution phases of baggage handling system projects.
  • Assist in the development of project plans, timelines, and resource allocation to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Provide technical support during installation phases to troubleshoot issues as they arise.

Support FM for Technical Investigation:

  • Provide technical support to Facilities Management in conducting investigations related to system failures or operational issues.
  • Offer expertise in troubleshooting complex problems affecting building services operations.

Asset Commissioning:

  • Participate in the commissioning process of new baggage handling equipment and systems.
  • Conduct thorough testing procedures to validate system performance against design specifications.
  • Document commissioning results and prepare reports for review by project stakeholders.

Testing and Validation:

  • Execute comprehensive testing protocols to ensure all components of the baggage handling system function correctly under various operational scenarios.
  • Validate compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements throughout testing phases.
  • Identify potential risks or failures during testing and recommend corrective actions.

Technical Assurance:

  • Provide expertise in technical assurance processes to guarantee that all systems meet operational readiness criteria.
  • Review technical documentation related to system design, operation manuals, and maintenance procedures.
  • Liaise with engineering teams to address any discrepancies or concerns regarding system functionality.

Support for Technical Documentation for CDM Approvals:

  • Prepare comprehensive technical activity plan for building services project manager to support the development of documentations for Construction (Design and Management) Regulations approvals.
  • Ensure all technical activity plans meets legal requirements and is submitted to project manager in a timely manner.

Technical Training for Baggage Engineering Team:

  • Develop and deliver training programs with building services TACM (Training and Compliance Manager) aimed at enhancing the skills of the baggage engineering team.
  • Focus on areas such as system operation, maintenance procedures, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance.

Compliance with Health & Safety Regulations:

  • Understand and comply with health and safety regulations.
  • Understand and comply with security protocols by regulatory bodies such as the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Foster effective communication among team members, stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Engage in regular meetings to discuss ongoing projects, challenges faced in operations, and potential solutions.

 

Key Competencies:

  • Minimum of 5 years M&E experience in conveyor belt systems including PPM, fault diagnosis and rectification
  • Demonstratable knowledge of M&E Fault Diagnostics
  • Strong ability to understand technical drawings and schematics
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and prioritise tasks
  • Strong analytical skills for conducting technical investigations.
  • Proficiency in creating technical documentation and processes.
  • Effective communication skills both written and verbal for training purposes as well as stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently under pressure.
  • Demonstrable ability to work unsupervised and take accountability for areas of work
  • Evaluate situations on facts not opinions, analyse, problem solve and identify core issues
  • Keep documentation in an orderly fashion
  • Ability to work at Height
  • System Testing and validation (Electrical, Mechanical and Controls)

 

Qualifications:

  • City & Guilds, BTEC or NVQ 3 in Engineering maintenance related subject
  • 18th Edition, IEE wiring regulations qualified
  • Full Driving license
  • IPAF
  • PASMA
  • Understanding of the programmable logic controller systems.
  • Experienced on SCADA system control and testing.

 

Working Hours and Conditions:

40-hour week Mon-Fri with flexibility to cover weekend for technical incidents, projects and planned major maintenance.
